Neurodivergence shapes perception in ways that many traditional therapeutic models fail to accommodate. Too often, therapy imposes rigid, oversimplified explanations onto experiences that require depth and nuance. When therapists lack training or insight into neurodivergent and gifted minds, they may misdiagnose, invalidate, or reinforce masking, leaving clients feeling unseen and misunderstood.

A common frustration among neurodivergent and gifted individuals is that the mental health field tends to pathologize difference rather than understand it. Many therapy models are not designed for nonlinear thinking, intellectual intensity, or unconventional processing styles. Some clients even find themselves outpacing the structure of therapy—or at times, the cognitive capacity of their therapist. When a therapist struggles to keep up with a client’s reasoning, abstract thinking, or depth of insight, therapy can become stagnant or even dismissive.

It’s understandable that neurodivergent and gifted individuals often carry a natural skepticism toward authority and the mental health field. I respect this skepticism and encourage intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and open dialogue throughout the therapeutic process. Whether you engage with the world through deep analysis, heightened emotional sensitivity, or a unique cognitive style, your way of thinking is both valid and valuable. If you’re seeking support, I strive to provide a space where your mind is not only understood but appreciated.
